Learning To Sail
(You mean there are rules?)

I joined a Yacht Club.  Ok it's not a yacht club like Thurston Howell III would join – it's more of a sailing club.  Harbor Sailboats (www.harborsailboats.com) is on Harbor Island in San Diego where they offer sailing lessons, and rent sailboats. From 22' Capri boats up to 47' Beneteau.  Nice fleet.

You have to be certified at different levels, to take out different size boats.  While I had a Hobie Cat in Houston with Danny Creedon, we taught ourselves how to sail by reading the manual and setting sail.  Wasn't real comforting sometimes with a 100 ton oil tanker bearing down on us, but we survived.

Here's a few pictures of the area and my first certification class.

Not A Bad Setting

Harbor Island Marina is close to downtown San Diego, and just minutes from the Airport.  It's in a sheltered cove, just off of San Diego Bay.  Thousands of boat, from the smallest to enourmous yachts call this home.

 All Lined Up

The office overlooks this section of the dock, and all the club's boats are down this row.

Basic Keel Boat Course

This required course teaches (or refreshes) the basic rules, even for people that have sailed before.  They keep the classes small, four people plus the instructor.  Of course, 22 foot boats won't hold any more.  While this is not a kids place exactly, I had two kids from Tucson in the class along with a probation officer from Phoenix.  All these Arizona people.  The probation officer was good - kept the two bratty kids in line.  The guy in the black jacket with broad brim hat is the instructor, Nils.

Starting Out

22 foot Capri at the docks.

Gilligan's Happy

The instructor and probation officer obviously being more serious.  The girl was a ham though - wanted to be an actress.

Classroom

Ninety percent of the class is in the boat, but we did have a nice setting for the other 10%

Wash Down

Here is Nils showing us how to wash down the boat after sailing.   And this wasn't even on the test.
