Windows Wallpapers - Johnson Family

I''ve created a few wallpaper files from various great Johnson pictures.  You just need to download these files and install them as your wallpaper.  Microsoft Windows only uses .BMP files for wallpaper, and these files tend to be large.  When you click on the respective links below, the file will not automatically open up in your browser window, but a pop-up dialog box will appear asking you to open the file or save it.  YOU WANT TO SAVE IT.

Briefly you will need to do the following:

  • Download the file(s) you want by clicking on picture or link and SAVE the file to your PC
  • Save the file to your C:\Windows directory.  (Windows automatically looks here for wallpapers}
  • Change the the wallpaper selection in your Screen Properties box

I have included  detailed instructions for these steps at the end of this page.

I am also working on an easy to distribute and easy to install screensaver which would cycle through multiple images.  I also will continue to add more wallpapers.  If you have any suggestions, let me know.

Note:  The actual wallpaper pictures are much larger and have greater detail than what you see here.  Depending on your internet connection, modem speed, and even time of day, the download for each picture could take several minutes.  Although you can only have one wallpaper active at a time, you may want to download several, and then change them on your PC frequently for variety.

Download and Installation Instructions

I've included some detailed instructions for those not familiar with setting up new wallpapers.  If you are experienced at this, there is nothing out of the ordinary about these files, so go ahead and and download and set you wallpaper.

Downloading

First thing you need to do is download the .bmp file to your c:\windows directory.

  1. When you click on the picture or the link, one of the dialog boxes on the right should appear.  One is from Microsoft Explorer browser, the other is from Netscape browser. (Fig. 1A and 1B)
  2. Be sure to SAVE this file, do not open it at this time.
  3. When you Select OK, another Dialog Box will appear, allowing you to save the file in a directory of your choosing. (Fig. 2)
  4. Save it to c:\windows.

Installation

Now you need to change the default windows wallpaper.

  1. Either close or minimize your web browser.  You need to be able to see your current desktop (wallpaper)
  2. Move your mouse to an open area on your desktop, and click your right mouse button.
  3. A small pop-up menu will appear (Fig. 3).  Choose the Properties option at the bottom.
  4. The Windows Properties dialog box will now appear (Fig. 4).
  5. The Wallpaper is referred here as Background.  By default this is the tab that is showing.
  6. In the list of files, move the scroll bar until you find the Johnson file that you are looking for.
  7. Highlight that file with your cursor, and then select OK.
  8. Your new wallpaper (background should now appear on your desktop.

NOTE:  If the wallpaper file you were expecting did not appear in the scrolling file list, your download did not complete correctly.  Several things could have happened.

  1. Did the internet download finish?
  2. Did you SAVE the file in the c:\windows directory?
  3. Did you SAVE the file with a .BMP extension?

Each of those steps needed to be completed correctly.  Try the following:

  1. Try locating the file (using My Computer or Windows Explorer).   Maybe you saved the file in a different directory.  If you did save it someplace else (like a Temp directory or My Documents) move or copy the file to c:\windows).
  2. Try downloading the file again from the internet.

NOTE:  You can actually leave the file in a different directory than c:\windows.  However, you will need to use the Browse button (in Fig. 4) to find the file.  For good system management though, it is best if all your wallpapers are in one directory, in this case c:\windows, since that is the default.

If you were not able to successfully install the wallpaper of your choice or had difficulty because I wrote bad instructions, please send me an e-mail describing the problem.  (Sometimes, we developers think you can read our minds.  And I actually would prefer you didn't, it could be frightening.)  Good luck.  gary@gclark.com
